The first TICA Innovator Award in The Gambia!

Each day Abubaker Coker (Abu) looks after the pool and guests at the Golden Beach Hotel in The Gambia, West Africa.  Abu demonstrates excellent customer service by providing a well maintained pool and a friendly service to all guests in the swimming pool area each day.

During a conversation by the poolside In December 2009 Abu was asked by Terry of TDI to identify one idea for innovation to improve service to guests and was given 5 minutes to do so.  He came up with 4 ideas in 5 minutes - all of these ideas were practical and would improve customer service for guests.  This illustrates the untapped potential of most members of staff in any organisation to contribute innovation.

The idea of more music was responded to immediately by the senior manger on duty, Nafie Secka, who came to the pool bar and found a CD player which was put into use immediately. Nafie had attended the TICA Innovation Guide Award course at the Kairaba Hotel www.kairabahotel.com in December 2008 and showed on this occasion that she could respond with prompt support and guidance when required.

Ebrima Bah (right), TDI Representative in The Gambia,  presented the TICA  Innovator Award to Abu (left) at the poolside today to the obvious joy of Abu.
The Management also gave Abu time so that he could attend the 2 day Innovation Guide development programme on Monday and Tuesday last week.  Abu has gained his ILM Innovation Guide development programme certification.  More information about the Institute of Leadership and Managment (ILM) is available at www.i-l-m.com

The Innovation Challenge Awards (TICA)  programme is designed to assist any organisation to develop "a culture for the growth and implementation of ideas".  Awards are available for Innovators, Team leaders, Teams and the whole Organisation to provide a source of recognition and reward for the contribution of innovation. 

The aim is to inspire each member of staff to contribute one innovation each year so the organisation is always working towards excellence in the number and quality of services it offers to its guests.
