Prime Minister Tony Blair addressing Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 2004

“What will happen to our market share if we fail to innovate and ignore new ideas marketed by our competitors?”
Managing Director, Terry Houlihan 2004

"Marks & Spencer is now back in the top 4 retailers this Christmas because I focused on Pricing, Value and Innovation"
Sir Stuart Rose, Chief Executive M&S January 2007

2   Encouraging Innovation

a   Respect - When the performance of staff is recognised and rewarded, staff will feel confident to offer their ideas.

b   Support -  To provide initiatives that encourage the development of a whole company culture so that ideas can be discovered, grow and implemented to maximum benefit of the organisation and its customers.

c   Direction - To train managers and leaders to become Innovation Guides so that they can encourage the growth of ideas and direct the implementation of innovation that is appropriate to achieve the shared vision.

3   TDI Drivers for Innovation

a   The Innovation Challenge Awards (TICA) - This programme provides a driver to stimulate the discovery and successful exploitation of ideas by using an awards programme to stimulate achievement and give recognition. It also provides a driver through an innovation management framework to ensure that the focus on innovation within the organisation is maintained as part of the company culture.

b   Working Towards Excellence - 10 Steps to Improvement -  This programme has been successfully used by over 150 organisations for 5 years to ensure a rigorous approach to quality improvement in each 12 month period.

'10 Steps' provides a driver for innovation by the implementation of the Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) which follows a rigorous self-assessment. It has many applications and at present is being used for innovation related to Quality Standards, Team Development (UK, Greece & Egypt) and Diving Centres (Egypt).

c   Guided Professional Development - This programme has been used and continuously developed for 8 years.  Team Leaders are trained as Professional Development Guides (PDG) to support individual staff during their professional development reviews.  A part of this review will focus on their contribution to their team. This provides a driver to encourage the growth of ideas that are relevant to the individual and the organisation.

d   Innovation Seminars - These seminars are particularly designed for the benefit of chief executives, senior managers, team leaders and owners of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) internationally as it is possible to influence a large number of key decision makers in a short time.

The aim of these seminars is to provide an opportunity for those involved in the management of  organisations to come together to experience a vision of a  'culture for the growth of ides'. The objective is to inspire a sustainable approach to innovation.
